this is me.

I am not the girl I used to be, that I once knew. I don’t know me anymore. Everybody changes throughout the years, but my change wasn’t positive. I developed anxiety, depression and an eating disorder- all severe. If you talked to me when I was ten, I’d be just fine. If you put cake in front of me, I’d eat it all without even giving it a second thought. Well, not now…

It all started going downhill when I was in seventh grade, during field hockey season. I was the awkwardly tall girl, the ugly one. I felt like a misfit. I began feeling like nothing I did was right, that I wasn’t good enough for anything or anyone. I didn’t know what was happening or why I felt this way, I was oblivious to what was going on. Too young and neieve to understand mental illness.

In field hockey practice, I couldn’t run as long or as fast as the other girls, I couldn’t do as many push ups. I felt huge compared to all of them with their toned bodies, but I didn’t want to quit. Being on the field hockey team meant you were cool at my school, and my self-confidence was already low, I needed something to pick me up. I became the goalie. That way, I wouldn’t have to run during games and embarrass myself, but I’d still be a part of the team. Excluded, but I still had somewhere I convinced myself I fit in. I had a hard time socializing with the other players, so field hockey began to make me miserable. I wanted to fit in for real… I decided I needed to lose weight. Skinny means happy, right?

I started at about 160 lbs and dropped all the way down to 118 lbs all within two months. I was blind to the illness that was taking over my mind and body. Anorexia made my depression levels shoot through the roof. I began to self-harm. By eighth grade I had started losing my friends, dropping them one by one, isolating myself. This is when I was first brought to CPEP (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program) and was hospitalized. I’d tried harming myself by taking pills before, but it never did anything. This time, I was so depressed I didn’t even have to take any pills. My school guidance counselor was talking with me, and ended calling my mom telling her I needed to go to CPEP. I was in the hospital for a little over a week, it taught me nothing… If anything, being in the psych ward and seeing other people with worse scars than me just made my depression worse and triggered me.

An eating disorder both physically and mentally kills you. You become more depressed and self conscious than ever, and ontop of that you start becoming weaker and colder every day. Each meal I’d skip would bring me one step closer to death, whether it be a death caused by me purposly, or if I just dropped dead like a fly from starvation one day. Death seemed like such a luxury to me… I became blind to everything. I wouldn’t have to deal with my problems, I wouldn’t need food, I could be skinny and pretty… It seemed so perfect in my head.

My cutting started getting worse. Deeper, more often, more places. I’d wear sweaters all the time and try to keep my tears tucked away when I was at school. To the naked eye, I would’ve just looked like any other happy middle school girl on the outside… But if you could read my mind you’d be in tears. The things I thought about myself were downright awful, things you’d never even think a young girl would think about her worst enemy.

The only person I’ve ever hated more than I hated myself, was my sister’s boyfriend. When I was 14, he raped me. I went to the police about it, but it was too late. All the evidence was gone by that point, and obviously he wasn’t going to admit to it. You would think that my own sister would beleive me, but she chose him over me (her famiy). We haven’t spoke a word to eachother in over two years and still live in the same house. So as a result of being forced into sex, I lost a sister.

To regain control again, I went and slept around, which I never was proud of. After a little while, I started thinking more and more about what happened. I hated myself because I felt as if I could’ve prevented it or at least done more to avoid the situation. I stopped sleeping with random guys because the fear of that happening to me again grew so strong. Now, it takes a lot for me to even kiss a guy without having flashbacks and being terrified of it happening again.

A year later, it did… Only this time, it was worse. I didn’t even know the guy, and I tried even harder this time to stop it from happening. I knew this time I had to go to the police sooner rather than later, so I did.

Being raped once is hard enough, but twice? It’s awful. Especially this young. It really messes you up, it ruins your trust in other relationships- even with your friends. You isolate yourself and blame yourself for everything that happened.

Something else I blame myself for is losing a baby… I once thought I loved someone after I accidentally got pregnant. I guess I just didn’t want to be a single mother. Sadly, I didn’t have to worry about that for long. It ended in a miscarriage. I grew to love that baby even though it wasn’t even an actual baby yet, but still, losing it was one of the worst things that’s ever happened to me. And it was all my fault. Maybe if my eating was stable it wouldn’t have happened, but it was for the best, I wouldn’t have been able to support the child or give it the life I’d want it to have. But now, there’s the question- will I ever be able to have children? Not knowing might hurt more than if I knew the answer, but I don’t…

About a year after my eating disorder first developed, my parents began noticing I was getting thinner and took me to a nutritionist who I began seeing weekly for about a year and a half. They ended up sending me to a residential care unit in Boston, MA for two weeks. It was rough, but it helped for a little over a year. I could feel myself starting to relapse.

I would do anything to go back to the girl I used to be… To have friends again, to be happy. As you get into your teenage years, I feel as if things get worse for everybody. Most people end up losing friends and dealing with drama. But some things just shouldn’t be happening.

When I was in fifth grade, I found out my father was cheating the night of my field hockey banquet. I started bawling and ran to the bathroom with my friends following me. A couple years later I told my mom. Now, six years later, they’re finally moving towards a divorce. Dealing with the fact that I was the one to tell my mom and ruin the family is awful, and I’m constantly being reminded of it.

On June 3rd. 2014, my friend passed away due to a motocross accident. Nobody at my school really knew him besides me because he lived in Kentucky. One of my best friends at the time said that she was glad that he had died. She didn’t even know him, how could someone have the audacity to say something like that? Especially the day after it happened… I ended up getting in a fight with her at school that day. They didn’t really consider it a fight though, they called it a “psychotic attack” because of how vicious I was and the fact that she didn’t hit me back. I ended up having to go to a hearing because of it and was suspended for the rest of the school year. There was only a couple weeks left though so it wasn’t too bad.

These experiences have made me stronger and smarter. Things will never be the same given what I’ve gone through and experienced, but I’m hoping one day I’ll find happiness in myself again.

This isn’t the end of my story, it’s just the beginning…

today’s society…

today’s society doesn’t understand the word “no”. this world we live in now, is so fucked. everyone just doesn’t care about anyone but themselves anymore. their own pleasure, even if the feeling isn’t mutual. if somebody wants something, they go through anything to get it. even if it’s just what they want and not both of you. at 14 years old- yeah, fourfuckingteen, my own sisters boyfriend raped me. i was with my friend and we went to what was supposed to be a party, but when we got there after getting picked up, it was just us two, my sister’s sick boyfriend, and his friend who was also in a relationship. that itself is fucked up. even if it were to be consensual, that’s cheating. and with family? that’s so fucking low.. i brought my dog with me incase anyone tried getting with me and i didn’t want it. i could just be like sorry i have my dog. well apparently i was wrong. he took my puppy from me and pulled me away from the bonfire near the woods that i have to drive past all the time and get reminded of it.. i said no so many times and tried everything i could to prevent it. but still to this day i blame myself for not preventing it and letting it happen to me. it’s my fault that he’s a sick individual even though i know that and what happened to me was nowhere near my fault. i was too scared to do anything about it after because i knew people would just say i was lying about it for attention or just didn’t like him or whatever. well, as you can see, i do have my reasons for not liking him. real reasons. not made up little lies. a little over a year later, i went to the police about it, but at that point there was no evidence and it was basically just his word against mine. a he said she said, where obviously he won’t admit to what he did to me and probably so many other poor girls that don’t deserve to go through that kind of pain and experience. i built up all that courage to tell someone and got shit on. called a liar by my own family, told i just wanted attention. i lost family because of it. a sister i once called my best friend is now a complete stranger to me. it’s something that you never forget and it sticks with you forever. years later when you find a guy that you truly love and they feel the same about you, you’ll even have trouble looking into his eyes without seeing the face of who took your innocence. what’s even scarier is when you know it’s happening, when you’ve experienced it before and it happens again. you feel even shittier every day about it because if it happened once why would you let yourself get into another situation like that and have it happen again? it’s my fault. but it’s not and i just can’t bring myself to realize that. when i was 16 i was with my friend, her boyfriend and one of his friends. we told her mom we were going to the movies, but instead we decided to go night fishing.. when we got there another friend showed up too and we realized we needed bait. there was only enough room for four of us in the car we were taking to get bait. then it was his truck and her boyfriends truck, both of which only seat two people. so i was told to stay at the fishing spot with the friend. i was getting anxious already before they even left. then, i was alone in the dark with a stranger where nobody would hear my screams. he started trying to kiss me and he turned the lights off. i texted my friend telling him to call me and pretend it was an emergency, but it was too late. he was already forcing himself into me and my friend didn’t get the message until later.. after it had already happened. it’s all embedded into my head so clearly and i get flash backs every day. in the memories, i see his face. his ugly, scumbag face. it’s dark and he’s telling me it’ll be okay, and i hear myself say no. but i don’t feel myself say it. i’m numb, as if i’m not even in my own body.. i cant feel myself yelling and kicking. it’s as if my cries meant i wanted him to keep going. the flashbacks are almost as bad as the actual experience. they make me feel even more at guilt for not trying harder. i let it happen. i didn’t stop it. i could’ve done more. but in the moment, i couldn’t have done more. i couldn’t think straight, i couldn’t function. the only words that i could get out of my mouth were “no” and “stop”. i couldn’t come to realization that there was a door right next to me i could’ve just opened and ran to get help. but i couldn’t have. he was holding me down. it can’t be my fault.

for anyone who’s gone through similar situations, or anything like this. it’s not your fault. you may live the rest of your life thinking you could’ve done more and it’ll haunt you every single day. but it wasn’t. what they did to you was not your fault at all. you tried everything in your power at the moment to stop it. don’t go over in your head what you could’ve done or should’ve done. because you couldn’t have. you were too scared to think and they should have respected the word no. it only has one meaning and they should’ve understood it. it’s not that hard to comprehend, it’s simple and only two letters. no.

i didn’t write this to get everyone’s pitty. i couldn’t care less about that. i did it so anyone who’s struggled with that knows they’re not alone and there’s someone they can talk to about it. so when someone tells me to take this down it’s too personal, i’m not going to. because other people who are struggling with this need to know it wasn’t their fault either.

i’m always just a message away. if you need someone to talk to i don’t care if it’s 2am and you’re a complete stranger, i’ll be there for you. i know what it’s like. but you never know what someone’s been through. don’t be selfish and blame them for it, listen.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by weight loss, or difficulties keeping a healthy weight. Many people with anorexia have a distorted body image, and usually restrict the number of calories they take in, along with having certain foods they refuse to eat. Some people with the disorder also compulsively exercise or purge. Anorexia can affect all different kinds of people. The disorder usually begins during adolescence.
To be diagnosed with anorexia the following criteria must be met:

1. Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health.

2. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.

3. Disturbance in the way in which one’s body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.

Even if all these criteria are not met, an eating disorder may still be present.

Today i realized, I’m unsure what to do. Do I take the chance of being buried next? Or rather do I try to help others in that position?

The simple answer would probably be to help others and not be selfish. But eating disorders get the best of so many people. You believe you can do both, then wind up dead. That’s the harsh reality of it, sorry.

My ED is such a selfish bastard. “Oh, your mom made you a nice dinner? Wrap it up and throw it away.” If you find someone hiding their food, seek help.

Sometimes mindful eating can be helpful when trying to enjoy a meal with family. Focus on every sense:

  • Sight – What shape is it?
  • Smell – Does it smell good?
  • Touch – Does it have a texture?
  • Taste – Is it sweet?
  • Sound – Is it crunchy?
  • This was a coping method i learned in a hospital that helps to ground yourself. If you try it, let me know if it works for you! If not, what’s your favorite coping skill?

    overcoming anorexia

    I was first diagnosed with an eating disorder in 7th grade. Now, I’m a senior so I’ve had my fair share of not only recovery but also relapsing. If you don’t know what anorexia nervous is, check out my blog post on it by clicking here.

    My life with eating disorder has been like a rollercoaster, super up and down. Literally, my weight will go up as I get healthier, then suddenly start dropping again when I relapse. This not only effects your physical health, but also your mental health.

    Signs of “ED”:

    • Hiding/Getting Rid of Food
    • Wearing Baggy Clothing
    • Coldness
    • Weight Loss
    • Dizziness
    • Depression/Anxiety
  • Eating disorders, also referred to as “ED”, are extremely dangerous, and the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem– it’s true. I used to believe the way I saw my body really was the way other people saw it, later I found out it’s body dysmorphia that causes me to see myself as overweight. But anorexia is not just about wanting to be skinny and have the perfect body. In my case, one of the underlying issues of my anorexia is needing control over something in my life.
  • It doesn’t stop there though. There are many other reasons as to why people develop eating disorders, such as using food restriction as a coping mechanism.
  • I guess the best term to use here would be that “voices” begin to develop in your head after a while, telling you to restrict, to throw up, that you’re fat, to exercise. Maybe you can still feel the hunger, but you listen to the voices anyways. You think they’re true, so you listen.
  • You need to be stronger than ED to recover, which is hard because it weakens you so much. You need to KNOW you’re sick and WANT to get better. The process is very difficult, especially in the beginning, but it gets easier with time. Even when you reach a healthy weight, you may still feel urges and get negative thoughts in your head. The illness does not just “disappear”. Lots of people end up living with some symptoms of an eating disorder for the rest of their lives. Also, eating disorders can permanently affect your body in different ways.

  • What Do I Want To Do?

    This is going to be somewhat of a confusing post, I just want to get my ideas and what’s going through my head written down, so bear with me for a minute.

    There comes a time for everyone when we need to decide what it is we want to do with our lives. Do you want to be a doctor? A teacher? What about raising fish at a fish hatchery? There’s so many options out there, which is partly what makes the decision so difficult for so many of us. Some people know their whole lives exactly what they want to do and how they’re going to do it. Others, like me, have no clue.

    My whole life, I’ve wanted to go into the medical field. But, with switching to an alternative school freshman year that doesn’t offer advanced regents diplomas, makes it harder for me to do that. Yes, I can still do it, but it’ll be a lot harder. And talking with my guidance counselor about all my options makes me realize everything else that’s out there. Do I still want to go into the medical field? It all leaves me unsure on what to do. A new chapter of my life is about to begin and I’m going in blind. I have no clue anymore what I’m good at, what my skills are, what I want to do. It’s confusing and leaves me with a lot of stress…

    I started taking career quizzes online, the results are all very similar- doctor, nurse, counselor. What I need to do, is find something that’s a little bit of everything in a way. What I’m leaning most towards now, is a psychologist. My aunt owns her own practice so I would already have a good job lined up, and she would be able to help me through it. I want to help people, and given everything I’ve gone through, I feel as if I would be good at that.
